Gorgeous and unusual large solid gold bronze, antique replica of a French St Benedict medal with wording in Latin. The depth of the details on this medallion is just beautiful. I am blessed to have this rare original in my collection and be able to share this replica with you. The Saint Benedict prayer card shown in photos is included in the gift box.
This is a big, thicker, amazing protection medal that measures 1.2 inches diameter (plus the top rectangle bail portion). Please see photos for comparison next to a quarter coin.
This is available as the medallion only (with a ring), on a 26” black suede cord, on a 26” brown suede cord, or on a solid gold bronze 3.65mm rolo chain. Please contact me if you would prefer a different length than listed. Abbreviations are due to Etsy limits on the number of letters in the drop down box.
The front of the medal has "Sanctus Benedictus", meaning Holy Saint Benedict.
On the backside, the vertical beam of the Cross has five letters C.S.S.M.L., meaning Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux (May the Holy Cross be for me a light).
On the backside, the horizontal beam of the Cross has five letters N.D.S.M.D., meaning Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux (Let not the dragon be my guide).
On the backside, the four large letters at the angles of the Cross C S P B stand for Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict).
On the backside, encircling the Cross in a circle around the right margin are the letters V.R.S.N.S.M.V. meaning Vade retro Satana; nunquam suade mihi vana (Begone Satan! Suggest not to me thy vain things).
On the backside, encircling the Cross in a circle around the left margin are the letters S.M.Q.L.I.V.B., meaning Sunt mala quae libas; ipse venena bibas (The drink you offer is evil; drink that poison yourself).
This fine replica piece is cast in solid gold bronze using the lost wax method and produced in the U.S.A. The oxidation (antiquing) finishing process allows the details to radiate! Gold bronze is a yellow version of the more common red bronze. Depending on usage (such as contact with water, perspiration, etc.) the medallion may need polishing periodically with a cloth. Since it is solid gold bronze throughout, it can always be polished brighter, if desired. A polishing cloth is included in the gift box.
